THE WATERLOO BATTLE
The connection between Castell d’Empordà and Napoleon is Albert himself. It took him nearly 20 years to build Europe’s biggest scale model of the Battle of Waterloo that now can be found in the heart of the castle. The 18 square metre representation includes 2000 toy soldiers and about 500 horses, all of which are hand-painted.
The idea for the scale model stems back to Albert’s family history. His great-great-grandfather was a veteran of Napoleon’s Grande Armée and kept a diary of his adventures with the emperor. Albert also built a model of Castell d’Empordà being sieged in the 11th century, which is presented on the first floor right above the hotel reception.
THE VERSATILITY OF CATALONIA
Castell d’Empordà favours a unique position in the hilly backyard of the Costa Brava. In the midst of natural tranquility and just minutes away from the vivid vibe of city life and popular beaches. The region offers a wide variety of recreational and cultural activities.
MEDIEVAL VILLAGES
The medieval period was of enormous importance in the Girona area, with history forged by the great monasteries and the small independent earldoms, castles, Romanesque and Gothic churches. La Bisbal boasts a castle in the centre of the town, porticoed houses, a beautiful main square and an old Jewish quarter.
Together with the three surrounding villages of Monells, Cruïlles and Corçà, this is an attractive route. Monells and Cruïlles are both only two km away from La Bisbal.
The porticoed square is the main point of interest in Monells. However, by far the most interesting feature of the three villages is the 11th-12th-century Cruïlles; Madremanya and Sant Martí Vell, which houses a curious late Gothic spire, all of which are on the same road.
You will also find Peratallada, a typically medieval fortified village; and Ullastret, well known for the nearby Iberian settlement. Palau-sator, Pals and Sant Feliu de Boada, are three other villages that stand out for their medieval patrimony.
GIRONA DAY TRIP
More than a thousand years of history come together in ancient Girona, which extends around the single nave cathedral and the alleyways of the Jewish Quarter. The past and the beauty of the city attract more and more tourists.
Girona thanks its growing popularity partly to the increased number of routes that connect the Girona – Costa Brava airport with almost every important European city. Especially Ryanair is responsible for this development, bringing millions of tourists to Girona each year.
A lot of them visit the city with its Arabian baths, beautiful boulevards or the monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants. These and other attractions makes Girona a required stop for any tourist, offering a wide range of possibilities. The distance from Castell to Girona is 30 km. This is about 40 minutes by car.
COSTA BRAVA HOLIDAYS
Visit the small bays and beaches of Aiguafreda and Sa Tuna. The abrupt cliffs, the transparent waters and the exuberant vegetation that surrounds them make this the area with the greatest landscape beauty of the Costa Brava.
Walk along the seaside paths that link together Calella and Llafranc, and arrive at the San Sebastia lighthouse in Llafranch, a privileged view point 167 meters above sea level where there is a baroque sanctuary. The panoramic view of the bays of Llafranch and Calella is one of great beauty.
BARCELONA
To speak of Barcelona is to speak of a city where experiences and sensations go beyond the streets and the people. It is an inexhaustible source of non-stop stimuli and experiences that touch all the senses.
In addition to the architectural and urban interest, the commercial offer of more than 35,000 establishments allows the coexistence of the most renowned international brands with the distinguished original brands of the city.
