COSTA CAREYES IS SAVING THE SEA TURTLES!
For over 33 years, sea turtles arriving to nest in Careyes have been protected by the Brignone family, Careyes residents and a dedicated team of locals. In 1983 a preservation program to increase their chance of survival against predators officially began with the help of biologist Alejandro Pena de Niz.
Only 10 nests were protected the first year. To date, 16,579 nests have been protected and more than 1,350,000 newborn turtles from four different species — Olive Ridley, Black, Hawksbill, and Leatherback — have been released back into their natural habitat.
Costa Careyes is the only place on the Pacific Coast of Mexico where the Hawksbill sea turtles come to nest regularly. The past season, was record breaking! For the first time in 33 years, 2058 sea turtles nested in Playa Teopa. This population will only increase in the future.
This is why The ?! Careyes Foundation seeks to expand the facilities in Costa Careyes to protect this new influx, to ensure the endangered sea turtles continue to have a safe sanctuary in which to nest for years to come.
Both locals and visitors are encouraged to participate in collecting nests and releasing hatchlings, providing a unique insight and appreciation for one of the world’s oldest surviving species.
THE WONDERS OF CAREYES
Gian Franco Brignone, the founder of Costa Careyes, dreamt of a man and a woman united by the cosmos while bathed in the light of the setting sun. In 2006, the manifestations of his dream were created.
Majestically perched on a cliff overlooking Playa Teopa, La Copa del Sol, which represents the woman, rises 35 feet from its base and is over 88 feet in diameter. Equally an acoustic and visual marvel, it catches and cups the sun.
THE PIRAMIDION
The Piramidion, which represents the man, is tucked inside of a cave a mile inland from La Copa. Aligned in such a way that the sun appears to set into La Copa while illuminating the Piramidion. These structures unite, just as in the dream, on the equinoxes of March and September.
EL CENTRO DEL UNIVERSE
As the cave sheltering the Piramidion was being excavated, dozens of ancient stones pulled from the depths of the mountain accumulated. Deemed sacred, they now spiral into El Centro de Universo at the top of Cabeza del Indio.
El Centro del Universe is accessible by a 40minute guided hike known as, “Camino de la Vida”. All of the wonders of Costa Careyes can be toured and/or reserved for private events.
WEDDINGS
Weddings in Costa Careyes, on the Mexican Pacific Coast of Jalisco are truly magical. As are the renewal of vows long ago taken and still revered. Denominational ceremonies are beautifully accommodated in the two Catholic Churches in the quaint neighboring villages.
Non denominational ceremonies, which can be as simple as a civil service, or as exotic as a traditional Mayan or Aztec ceremony are equally lovely when held by the sea as the sun sets or in an Ocean Castle built into the cliffs with 360 degree views of the ocean surrounded by tropical gardens.
Costa Careyes can accommodate a variety of weddings. From gatherings as simple as a Chupa on the beach with dinner and dancing in the sand around a bonfire or in Playa Rosa Beach Club, to as grand as elegant black tie celebrations in an Ocean Castle.
If you can dream it, Costa Careyes can create it. No cuisine is too exotic, nor wedding too grand. Any menu request will happily be met by our exceptionally talented culinary team.
Music, live performances, entertainment of all kinds, fabulous floral arrangements, décor and/or the transformation of any event space can happily be arranged for you and your guests on your most special day.
