HISTORY
With an unparalleled location above the Baluard del Príncep, we felt it was only fitting to name our hotel after the Prince who oversaw the walls’ contruction and later reigned under the name of Felipe II.
As a deeply-rooted Mallorcan family we also felt compelled to enhance the hotel’s boutique-style luxury with lashings of the authentically Mallorcan, as evident in our décor, architecture and atmosphere.
TANNER’S GUILD
In Roman, Arab and medieval times, districts were divided by the city’s various guilds and Es Princep is located in what used to be the local tanners’ area.
In fact, age-old parts which were used to process animal hides were discovered exactly where the hotel now stands. These marvelous finds, now artfully displayed, are unique remains from Palma’s medieval age.
A CITY OF STORIES
Palma de Mallorca, founded by the Romans in 123 BC, was once heavily fortified. When the town grew beyond the ancient Roman wall in the 11th Century, a new wall was built, which surrounded an area now known as the city’s Casco Antiguo or Old Town.
From the many ancient ‘Baluards’ only the Baluard de Sant Pere and the Baluard del Príncep still stand. What’s more, the impressive Baluard del Príncep, stoic reminder of a bygone era, is located, quite literally, on our doorstep.

MUST-SEE MONUMENTS
Palma is the perfect example of a delightfully balanced city. It contains as much beauty, history and culture as it does fun and entertainment. A pleasant and comfortable city to stroll from neighbourhood to neighbourhood, Palma’s main monuments and historical sites are some of the most precious treasures in Europe.
From Es Príncep we would like to take you on a tour of Palma’s main monuments. Architectural jewels of great historical value that make Palma a unique city.
Palma Cathedral: La Seu.
Undoubtedly, it is Palma’s star monument, an obligatory stop for visitors and locals alike. Its unbeatable location by the sea, its majesty, its architectural value and its unusual beauty make it one of the most important cathedrals in Europe.
Its Levantine Gothic style rises above the Roman and Renaissance walls that protected the city. It also stands out for being one of the tallest cathedrals with the largest and most spectacular rose window in Europe, known as “the Gothic eye”. Undoubtedly, one of the most precious treasures.
La Llotja building.
The silence, solemnity and immensity of this civil Gothic building are overwhelming. Built between 1420 and 1452 by Guillem Sagrera, the Llotja de Palma has a rectangular floor plan covered with ribbed vaults.
A single space, diaphanous and majestic, divided into twelve parts by six pillars that rise towards the ceiling to form the ribs of the vaults. An artistic jewel.
Palau de l’Almudaina.
The different civilisations that have occupied the island have created different spaces adapted to their tastes and needs in the Palau de l’Almudaina. From the Talayotic period to the Romans and the Muslims.
One of the great attractions is the interior of the palace, which is perfectly preserved and it is a real pleasure to walk around its facilities. A must-see.
Bellver Castle
Bellver Castle is one of the few castles in Europe with a circular floor plan, and is the oldest of them all. An ancient fortress built at the beginning of the 14th century, it has become a historic site and an obligatory stop.
From the castle, which crowns a hill some 110 metres above sea level, you can see the waters of the Mediterranean and the Tramontana mountain range.
Convent of San Francisco
The Church and Cloister of San Francisco, built from the 13th century onwards, are some of the main Gothic style landmarks in Palma. In addition, inside you will enjoy a whole collection of works of art.
Palma is, without a doubt, a city to stroll around unhurriedly, calmly and with a desire to let yourself be flooded by beauty and history.
SA CALATRAVA
One of the attractions of Palma de Mallorca is its marvellous old quarter, where you will find the neighbourhood of La Calatrava and the hotel Es Príncep.
A medieval environment with a lot of history located near the sea and with different places to stop and appreciate the Gothic architecture of the Mallorcan capital. Strolling through the streets of La Calatrava is like strolling through the history of the Balearic capital.
Getting lost looking at the entrances of the buildings where you can see the wide vaults that, in ancient times, were used to allow the horse carriages to enter and park their horses in the courtyards. Nowadays, these stables have been converted into garages or courtyards that the owners have converted to their liking.
The walled city of Palma
What you should not miss if you visit the La Calatrava neighbourhood is a stroll along the murada in the centre of Palma. This is the section of the wall that surrounded the old city of Palma. It is one of the most emblematic areas of the city and offers views of the Parc de la Mar.
The Arab baths
Another must-see in the La Calatrava neighbourhood are Palma’s Arab baths. These are a faithful reflection of the city’s past. The Arab baths were founded on Roman remains, which are still fairly complete, in the historic heart of Palma.
Some of the rooms, steam pipes and the remains of the chimneys that were used to heat the water and air-condition some of the chambers are still preserved in the Arab baths.
The convent of Santa Clara
In the centre of Palma we can see a 13th century convent, the convent of Santa Clara, which is very peculiar and still has many things to discover today. A place of worship, peace, simplicity and a great history.
It is a construction that has undergone countless restructuring and reforms supported and financed by the island’s nobility. This convent is still home to the Poor Clare nuns.
La Calatrava is a neighbourhood with a lot of history, but in which we also find many businesses such as shops, bars, restaurants and hotels that have adapted to its architecture so that the image of the historic centre is not modified.
Get to know the best markets in Palma
One of the best ways to get to know a city thoroughly is to discover how its inhabitants live. Imitate the way they move, find out what excites them and how they breathe in a city that moves to the rhythm they set.
Getting to know Palma means getting to know its markets, meeting places where people from different walks of life come together to fill their pantries.
Weekly or daily purchases based on respect for local and quality products: Meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, handicrafts, flowers and much more. Those who know Palma appreciate its markets.
A market is able to speak about a city and the preferences of those who live there. A market speaks of the land and its fertility, of a city’s tradition and its seasons. From Es Príncep, we invite you to visit three of Palma’s most emblematic markets.
Mercat Santa Catalina
Much more than a market, Santa Catalina is the nerve centre of an entire neighbourhood. The perfect place to buy quality products, but also to drink a vermouth or eat in a bar from which to enjoy the city.
Located in the centre of one of the most popular and lively neighbourhoods of the city, Santa Catalina is a magical point of the city, lively and colourful, where more than 50 stalls will surprise you with fish, vegetables, meat, flowers, spices and cheeses of the highest quality.
Mercat de l’Olivar
Located in the heart of the city, between Plaza de España and Calle San Miguel, this market hosts more than a hundred stalls that flood all visitors with colours, smells and textures.
The Mercat de l’Olivar is much more than a point of sale where you can buy food, drinks or kitchen utensils. The Mercat de l’Olivar is an experience where you can taste wines, discover new flavours and enjoy fresh, high-quality products.
Mercat de Pere Garau
Authentic, genuine, special, multicultural, rich and welcoming. It is one of the most popular and authentic markets on the island. Fresh produce, flowers and plants, textiles and everything you are looking for can be found in a market that offers you a 100% local experience.
The Mercat de Pere Garau is located in a neighbourhood where different nationalities and customs coexist. Lots of South American products next to Chinese restaurants and traditional local bars and taverns. A mix that brings richness and uniqueness to one of Palma’s most popular neighbourhoods.
From Es Príncep, we invite you to walk through its corridors and mingle with the people. It will help you feel the pulse of a lively city in constant motion.
Wine routes in Mallorca: 4 wineries you can´t miss
Mallorca is a place you can enjoy with each of the five senses. You can touch it, see it, smell it, hear it and, of course, taste it.
Mallorca is sumptuous like the olive oil that comes from our olive trees, flavorful like the porc negre, the black pigs that run free through our fields, and rich in nuances like the grapevines that grow so healthy and strong throughout the island.
More than 70 wineries – nearly all of them located in Binissalem, in Pla, and in the Llevant region of the island – have achieved to make winemaking a true lifestyle here. Tastings, wine routes, and various activities are planned more and more often in order to bring the culture of wine to all those who are interested.
Our climate, similar to that of France, and our perfect wine-producing soil have allowed for all Mallorcan winemakers from every status and position to work the vines lovingly and with great skill, and Mallorca’s wineries have raised themselves to a place among the country’s greatest.
From Es Príncep, we would like to take you on a trip to some of Mallorca’s wineries. Although, of course, the best way to visit them is by walking there while discovering the heart of the island. Here, we offer you the pre-meal apéritif so that afterward you may savor the copious feast:
- Mesquida Mora: This project, born in 2012 out of Bàrbara and Jaume Mesquida Mora’s restlessness, is one of Mallorca’s more interesting offers in recent years. Their biodynamic vineyard has revolutionized winemaking in the Balearic Islands by way of their sustainable production methods. Character and emotion in wines crafted from native grape varieties.
- Blanca Terra: A vinyard that began in 2014 after Bernat Febrer decided to leave everything and buy some land in Porreres and, with the help of a renowned vintner, to make excellent wines, both young and older vintages. The native and imported varieties of grapes cultivated here have turned out to be the highest quality of Mallorcan grapes.
- Macià Batle: Since 1857, this world-famous winery has sought to obtain excellency in its wines through the finest quality of grapes. By using traditional Mallorcan grape varieties, mainly Manto Negro and Callet for red wine and Moll for white wine, they have succeeded in producing some very special wines that are well recognized by wine lovers.
- José Luis Ferrer: One of the island’s biggest and most renowned. This famous family-run winery is known for its marvelous wines, made with Manto Negro, Callet and Moll grapes. International recognition came in 2014 thanks to their Crianza 2011 vintage, which won a gold medal at the “Berliner Wein Trophy” competition, a silver medal at “Vinalies” in Paris and at the “Premium Select Wine Challenge”.
After this little wine route, the only thing left to do is to enjoy taking a walk to explore these and many more wineries, try their wines and enjoy their tasting sessions. Are you excited to taste Mallorca?
What to do in Palma in three days
Getting to know a city can become a lifetime’s work. To know its most secret corners, its stories hidden behind the walls, its deep-rooted customs, its roots or its history. The colour it has in every season, the smell of its streets in the morning or the sweet taste of its summer nights.
However, to fall in love with a city, one second is enough. A love (perhaps at first sight) that will suddenly bind you to this place forever. It can be a street, a promenade, a façade or a corner.
We at Es Príncep are aware that it takes a little over three days to get to know Palma in depth, a city full of charm and attraction. But we also know that during these three days you will suffer more than once a crush on the city, which has something new to offer with each visit.
You only have three days? Don’t worry, we’ll tell you where to go to make you want to come back:
- Walk through the old town. A walk through the most traditional part of the city is a must. The Jewish quarter, the Arab baths and a multitude of narrow streets full of history in which you can get lost. Our advice: Leave the map aside and enjoy walking through unknown but charming alleys.
- Shopping at the Mercat de l’Olivar. If you enjoy the markets with fresh food, the Mercat de l’Olivar will be one of your favourite places. Located 5 minutes from Plaça Espanya, El Olivar is the reference market for those who enjoy quality products, a wide offer and the crowds. Stalls full of meat, fish, vegetables, fruit and flowers, but also bars and restaurants. A market is always a good indicator of a town and its inhabitants.
- Dinner and drinks in Santa Catalina. If you are looking for a variety of restaurants, nightlife and gorgeous neighbourhoods, you should take a walk through Santa Catalina, an old fishermen’s quarter that has not only preserved the charm of bygone times – its cobbled streets are admirable – but also offers a wide range of restaurants, bars and party places. Locals and visitors merge in the heat of the night.
- Walk in El Portixol. You can see the sea from every corner of this coastal quarter. Sportsmen, families, couples, people lying in the sun and terraces full of people. The perfect neighbourhood to enjoy the sea in winter and summer.
- Shopping in Jaime III and a visit to the cathedral. If you’re one of those people who likes to go shopping when travelling, then you’d better do it in style. Jaime III is not only one of the best-known shopping streets of Palma, but also one of the most beautiful areas of the city to discover. Tip: After shopping, take a walk to the Born and Plaza de la Reina. Standing at the foot of one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the world is priceless.
Three days may not be enough to discover a city, but we are sure that after this tour, you will want to spend many more days to discover it to the end.
