In the past 150 years, Healdsburg has morphed from the pioneer outpost it was during Harmon Heald’s days, to a sleepy town of prune and grape growers, to an acclaimed destination as the jewel of Sonoma County’s wine country.
HISTORY
Healdsburg’s founder, Harmon Heald, was a pioneer among pioneers. After a childhood fraught with struggle in Ohio and Missouri, Harmon and his brother Tom struck west for California following the gold rush in 1849.
Their mining ventures yielding nothing but typhoid and scurvy — illnesses that would leave Harmon in frail health for the rest of his life — Harmon and Tom joined their brother Samuel, who was building a sawmill on Mill Creek now in what’s considered the Russian River Valley.
In 1851, when Harmon built his first small cabin and trading post on what is now Healdsburg Avenue, the town was known as “stringtown”; an insignificant blip on the trail to the big logging communities in Mendocino County to the north. But Harmon Heald had a bigger vision.
In 1856, Harmon purchased the land that would become the town of Healdsburg. The following year, he built a larger store and filed a town plan that included not just lots for sale, but lots that he designated for the town Plaza, the cemetary, two schools and four churches.
Harmon Heald wanted the town to be more than a “stringtown” stop for raucous ramblers. He wanted it to be a place that families could settle and prosper as he himself did.
Sadly, Harmon died the following year before he could see the fruit of his efforts. But his legacy lives on in “Healdsburg,” which was named by the townspeople after the man they deemed “a friend, companion and counselor of all.”

ARTISTS + MAKERS
We believe that art is an integral part of both finding yourself, and creating a space in which you can lose yourself. In keeping with the rustic-yet-pioneering spirit of the hotel’s namesake, we’ve commissioned local artists whose work is both thoughtful and thought provoking, making use of a wide variety of materials and techniques.
ART INSTALLATIONS
We believe art can be both ephemeral and eternal. Passing experiences can have an effect that lasts a lifetime. Which is why we’re honored to make Harmon Guest House a “canvas” for renowned Sonoma County artists to create temporary art installations throughout the spaces of the hotel.
GREEN FEATURES
We built Harmon Guest House to be in harmony with both the community and the nature surrounding it, earning the prestigious LEED Gold Certification.
Environment
Despite Harmon’s small footprint, a full 43% of the total site is dedicated to outdoor space, almost half of which is landscaped with native varietals to help restore the neighboring Foss Creek riverbed. And the highly reflective roof and underground parking garage both reduce the amount of heat emitted by the building.
Water Efficiency
We employ a storm water management plan that reduces storm water runoff by 25% and removes 92% of particulate matter, protecting neighboring Foss Creek. Low-flow fixtures throughout the building cut water use by up to 35%, and a rainwater harvesting system and smart irrigation reduces water consumption by more than 50%.
Energy Efficiency
Harmon Guest House encourages alternative forms of transportation by providing a fleet of 26 bikes for guests to use to explore town, and 6 electric vehicle-charging stations. The building was designed to reduce energy use by 14% through things like rooftop solar thermal panels to heat water.
Materials + Atmosphere
Harmon Guest House minimizes airborne emissions by eliminating chlorofluorocarbon-based refrigerants – which are harmful to the ozone – in its HVAC systems.
The building itself was constructed with formaldehyde-free composite wood products, and low volatile organic compound (VOC) paints, sealants, adhesives, coatings and flooring to reduce exposure to harmful chemicals.
