HISTORY
You could get nostalgic looking at old postcards of Schenna. In the 1950s, it was still a dreamy farmers village with only a few guesthouses for the first holidaymakers. In some cases, guests could already rent a room in a farmers house.

Tourism was at its beginnings. However, year after year new friends arrived, and slowly, Schenna became the small little holiday village not far away from Merano. One of the first people who understood the signs of a new era was mister Mair.

He built the 1st bed and breakfast in “Schönna” – as it was spelled in those days. In these more than 60 years, lots of things have changed. Only one thing remained the same: the passion for our profession.

Rubein Suite
Suite, about 860 ft², with south-facing balcony. Walnut furnishings, upholstery in warm, beige-colored fabrics, and the ergonomic layout give the Suite an appealing elegance.

The ample walk-in closet, double bed in addition to an ancillary room fitted out with a French bed, can comfortably accommodate 2-4 persons. The comfortable bathroom is fitted out with a tub, spacious shower cabin, double washbasin, bidet, and separate WC.

From the main bedroom, there is a magnificent view of the surrounding mountains. The Rubein Suite is centrally positioned in the Main House, on the top floor. The restaurant, bar and main hall are all conveniently close by.

Hohenwart Suite
Hohenwart Suite, approx. 1,080 ft² incl. a glass-lined balcony with a fantastic view of Merano and Environs. The couches, sitting chairs and open-air bath on the balcony are an absolute highlight. 2 bedrooms, a living room with an elegant wooden floor, a fireplace, and a hanging swing for relaxing.

Each bedroom has its own bathroom with a large shower, and from the beds, thanks to the large windows, guests have magnificent views of the surrounding mountains or the Schenna Castle.

The high-quality materials also ensure a deep sense of well-being and modern climate ceilings provide comfortable warmth in the cold season and a pleasant freshness in summer. Dogs not allowed.

Bachmair Apartments
If you’d like to spend your holidays independently and in splendid isolation, we have might have the answer for you. Try one of our apartments in downtown Schenna, just a few minute’s walk from the town center and not far from the Hohenwart.

Here you can enjoy a peaceful vacation in a comfortable holiday apartment with a marvelous view of the green orchards in the valley against the backdrop of the peaks of the mountains silhouetted against the sky.

In total, there are 7 apartments of different sizes that can accommodate 2-5 people each and are suitable for couples, families and groups alike. Decorated with a touch of typical Tyrolean style in the rustic applewood finishes and pastel colors, conveying a touch of modernity.

As guests of the Bachmair Apartments, you can also enjoy full access to all facilities at the Hohenwart: from the Spa to the pool and restaurant, as well as the varied weekly activity program.

Gastronomy at the Hohenwart
We’re quite sure you’ll never have enough of our Tyrolean delicacies! From the rich breakfast buffet to the romantic afternoon tea with coffee and cakes, followed by the evening creations of the Alpine-Mediterranean gourmet cuisine, the Hohenwart kitchen team will constantly surprise and spoil you with fresh products of South Tyrol.

Indeed – variety, freshness, and creativity are the winning recipes of Chef Hannes Stuffer and his team when preparing refined dinners, delicious breakfast buffet, and afternoon snacks, for the most part using homegrown ingredients. For example, lamb is reared from the own Gsteier mountain inn while beef and veal are also local.

Wild herbs are sourced from the Haslerhof and various types of cheeses are supplied from local dairies, bread is baked by and supplied from organic bakeries in the South Tyrol; there is a local South Tyrolean speck, smoked sausages, and local honey while quality jams are made by a local producer, Alpe Pragas. Lettuce, herbs and much more are grown in the Hohenwart’s own vegetable garden.

Chef Hannes Stuffer knows well how to surprise our guests with his new gourmet creations while simultaneously maintaining a solid connection with traditional recipes.

At dinner time, the Chef gets to demonstrate his inventive and refined culinary skills, which shine through the spectrum of his creations: each of the five courses is an exquisite combination of different flavors and a testament to his highly considerable capabilities!

The dining experience is further enriched by a wide range of fine wines from the hotel’s own wine cellar and contains over 400 wines from all over South Tyrol and Northern Italy. The Hohenwart’s experienced sommeliers will advise the right wine to best complement your choice of dish.

The evening menu is moreover served in great style, in the congenial atmosphere of the Hohenwart main dining hall or in the Tyrolean “Stuben”. Or, if you prefer, the meal may also be served on the terrace. If you wish to follow a healthy diet to help you stay in shape, you may choose the no less delicious vital dishes.

The Best of two Cultures
High-level gastronomic delights are sure to be another highlight of your stay at the Hohenwart Hotel.

Sheer variety, freshness, and creativity are in constant use by the talented kitchen team in order to create the best of two cultures: a gourmet bonanza, consisting of Alpine and Mediterranean dishes prepared with the freshest seasonal products from the region.

All meals are served with a smile by the Hohenwart service team under the supervision of René Jacobs. In the morning you can enjoy a rich breakfast buffet – on the terrace, with a spectacular view of the garden, accompanied by a sweet smell of roses and birds singing – a perfect vacation day.

When returning from an excursion, there is freshly brewed coffee, tea, cakes, and light snacks in the afternoon which are a sure way to recover some energy before the traditional and exquisite dinner menu.

Gourmets and connoisseurs will have much to enjoy in the typical Tyrolean “Stuben”, in our restaurant, or under a starry sky on the romantic Hohenwart terrace.

The wine cellar is one spot at the Hohenwart designed to offer you the best in taste all year round, boasting a selection of individually selected fine wines, just waiting to be tasted.

Overall, the Hohenwart wine cellar contains about 400 fine wines from across Northern Italy and our experienced sommelier are best qualified to advise you.

The Hohenwart Wine-World
As Voltaire declared in one of his verses, “Wine is the nightingale among drinks”. In effect, it is just that: a glass of wine helps to raise the spirit and helps one forget about the woes of everyday life. What would a gourmet menu be if it wasn’t accompanied by the right wines?

In fact, the Hohenwart’s excellent wine selection serves to best complement the gourmet cuisine with around 400 regional and mostly Italian wines stocked in the cellar.

Thanks to the wide variety, they cover a wide spectrum, from the subtle to full-flavored, starting with aperitifs and dry whites, continuing up to full-bodied reds with complex flavors and ending with the sweet dessert wines and finally, a selection of digestive liqueurs.

The Hohenwart’s wine cellar is managed by our capable and experienced sommelier, Peter Lechner. His former hobby was turned into a business and he is always ready to advise you with the best choice of aromatic beverages to accompany your meals.

He is always looking for great buys, especially South Tyrolean and Italian wines and vineyards, to satisfy even the most discerning palates. If you also happen to be a wine connoisseur yourself, you can take part in one of Hohenwart’s weekly wine workshops which also include tastings.

You’ll have the opportunity to learn more about the origin and history of the featured wines, the different aromas contributing to the wine flavors and be able to discuss some of the more technical aspects of winemaking with our sommeliers.

In addition to wines and distillates, the cellar also stocks antique varieties of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. These are also for sale – as a gift or to take home a souvenir of the pleasant holidays spent at the Hohenwart.

Unique Wellness Moments – the VistaSpa
Our VistaSpa is entirely dedicated to your wellbeing. In fact, we can best describe the award-winning Hohenwart Wellness Centre as follows:

The Spa represents a singular haven of absolute tranquility and relaxation right in the heart of South Tyrol.

In line with the philosophy of the Mair family – namely, the combination of traditional hospitality with contemporary innovation – the VistaSpa partly derives its unique character from the synergy created between the natural materials such as woods, slates, glass, and felt materials.

Organic pastels blend harmoniously with bright reds, oranges, and greens, providing a soothing atmosphere. The treatment rooms are located on the first floor of the Wellness Centre.

One floor up, on the second floor, there are various saunas and steam baths, such as the Tyrolean sauna, a rose steam bath with roses, a salt steam bath, a bio-sauna “Ifinger”, and the “Jungbrunnen” shower area. There is also a small wellness library containing all kinds of literature about wellness.

When designing the Spa, the architects and interior decorators gave free rein to their imagination in the setting aside of recreational space: they came up with the “Alpenglühen” relaxation room which is striking due to its comfortable living area.

Then there is the “Traumkulisse” relaxation area with loungers arranged in a terraced fashion, in front of a magnificent, panoramic window, showcasing the picturesque Castle of Schenna and mountain vista.

Rocking chairs, relaxing music, and soft lighting are the main relaxation features in the “Sounds of Silence” relaxing room.

Saltwater Pool With 360° Panoramic Views
Water revitalizes, relaxes and can even entertain. At the Hohenwart Hotel, you can also experiment with a variety of bathing options, provided by a water surface totaling some 4,300 ft².

Up above, the VistaSpa rooftop terrace has been purpose-designed to bring you the most pleasurable variety of bathing environments such as the saltwater glass pool, which is at a comfortable temperature.

Those who experience it will not only feel its beneficial effects but also enjoy a spectacular 360° view of the Schenna Castle, the Adige Valley, and the majestic mountain peaks.

Thanks to the high salt content in the water, you’ll have the feeling of being gently rocked about and will effortlessly float about in the water. Disconnect from your worries and feel free to dream in an idyllic setting!

Indoor Pool and Family Sauna
In addition to the indoor swimming pool there is a steam bath, a Finnish sauna, and infrared cabins (all dress on), which provides pure relaxation with its warming rays.

In addition, comfortable loungers promise cozy hours in the usual feel-good atmosphere. Also, an ideal place to be, the lounge area with fresh juices, healthy teas, and delicious snacks. Your kids can look forward to water fun in the kids pool.

Outdoor Pool 82 ft
For the more sports-minded guests, plunge into the 82 ft outdoor pool situated in the green flower garden of the Hohenwart. Start your day with a fresh swim; lie back comfortably on one of the deck chairs under the warm sun. The outdoor pool remains heated all year round.

Wellness in South Tyrol
Although wellness in South Tyrol is ingrained in the local culture, wellness at the Belvita Leading Hotels is in a league of its own. As the best Wellness Hotels in South Tyrol, the hotels belonging to Belvita share the primary goal of offering their guests the best wellness experience in South Tyrol and beyond.

The Belvita philosophy is all about 4 central topics: Wellfeeling, Beauty, Vitale Cuisine, and Fitness. If a hotel bears the Belvita seal, you are guaranteed top quality of service and facilities in all these four areas. In addition, each hotel can specialize in more specific topics.

For example, the Hohenwart Hotel is specialized in “Premium Spa” services, meaning that Hohenwart invested considerable resources to provide top-notch spa- and wellness services – with excellent results.

The Belvita Hotels featuring the “Spa Premium” seal offer expansive spa centers with a variety of saunas, relaxation areas, pools, as well as top-quality beauty- and spa-treatments administered by specialized staff using best cosmetic products.

Pure Relaxation
On the 2nd floor of the Hohenwart VistaSpa, you’ll enter our “reign of well feeling”, with different saunas, steam baths as well as sensory showers and relaxation rooms.

Here, you can regulate temperature and humidity to suit your personal preference in several ambiances such as the Tyrolean or Ifinger Mountain Sauna, the rose or salt steam bath or the infrared cabin. Not to mention the Panoramic Sauna located on the VistaSpa rooftop terrace.

After an invigorating ice scrub or a refreshing hosing down in the sensory shower, you can choose from three fully customizable relaxation areas: the “Alpenglühen” relaxation room, which looks like a living room with a fireplace, an ideal ambiance for reading or perhaps sipping a cup of tea.

Here, snacks and healthy beverages are served regularly. In the “Sounds of Silence” relaxation room, with soft background music, you can fully enjoy the beneficial effects of the sauna. In the “Traumkulisse” room, the name says it all: lying on stepped loungers, you can admire the breathtaking views of Schenna Castle.

The wellness library will surely absorb you with its selection of books and magazines. And one floor up on the rooftop terrace, you can curl up on a sun-bed or relax in the secluded area to soak up the warm South Tyrolean sun. By the way: why not try one of our beneficial spa treatments on your holidays?

Family Sauna
In order to offer our guests the optimal relaxation experience, we limit the access of the VistaSpa to persons from the age of 16 years and above.

The indoor swimming pool and the family sauna, however, can also be used by children and adolescents. This area is situated on the ground level of the House Traube, with a spectacular view of the lush garden. There’s also the 82 ft all-year-round heated swimming pool.

The indoor swimming pool is especially suited for a relaxing swim or for water aerobics in cooler temperatures or on winter days, where both young and old can relax in the family sauna.

Besides the large indoor pool, there’s also a small pool for babies as well as saunas for the whole family: a sanarium, a steam bath, and an infrared cabin (all dress on) offer moments of relaxation and well-being for the whole family. You can relax on the daybeds, in the hammock or in the new sunbeds.

Hiking in Schenna and Environs
The mountains beckon you to come and discover the varied and spectacular region of Merano and Environs, a premium hiking destination. No other hiking area in the Alps comes even close to offering such a variety of excursions for all ages and with a variety of difficulty levels.

Discover a fairy-tale land on foot, from the comfortable “Waalwege” (kind of hiking trails along old irrigation channels), through meadows, fields, lush green pastures and quiet forests, right up to the rocky areas at the foot of the mountains.

You can also explore the cultural sites of the region throughout the year, following well-marked trails and enjoying bracing mountain hikes at high altitudes, while marveling at the spectacular landscape.

The Hohenwart has, for many years, organized hiking programs for its guests such as weekly excursions and itineraries with Hubert as well as with our hiking guide. While our mountain guide takes care of the high altitude summer excursions, the children’s climbing courses serve to prepare younger mountain enthusiasts.

A special excursion awaits you at breakfast-time starting at the Gsteier mountain inn and a shuttle is available for those who prefer a more leisurely excursion. In short, the Hohenwart offers you a custom vacation to best suit your requirements.

Silent Walk with Liesse
Once a week, guests of the Hohenwart Hotel take a deep breath during a “silent walk”. With our experienced hiking guide Liesse, the group departs from the idyllic mountain inn Gsteier at 1,380 m for a slow, but attentive walk to the Rio Val di Nova.

Those who wish can walk barefoot and will be rewarded with a foot refreshment at the waterfall. During the two-hour walk, breathing exercises are offered in a moss-covered forest clearing, which helps participants to find more peace and relaxation and arrive in the here and now.

The calm and deep breathing helps to perceive the surroundings with all senses. The scents of the mountain forest, the rustling of the trees in the wind and the chirping of the birds become more and more conscious and allow you to re-establish a deep connection with yourself.

Thoughts can vanish more easily and there is a pleasant silence – both inside and outside. Depending on the fitness level of the participants, some yoga positions will also be done to further increase the level of relaxation. After a short stay at the Rio Val di Nova, we will return to the starting point.

Full Speed Ahead!
Walking is great, but what about a ride through the lush green natural Alpine landscape of Merano and Environs? Around Schenna, there are about 124 miles of marked cycling paths. So whether you’re a recreational cyclist, on a cycling excursion, or interested in downhill cycling, fun and enjoyment are guaranteed.

A challenge for bikers is the Sella Ronda Bike Tour around the Sella Massif. The 33 to 36 miles long route with breathtaking panoramic views over the steep rocky slopes and peaks of the plateau-shaped mountain is leading up to the Sella Pass in four stages.

Depending on your level of physical fitness, a section of the ride at altitudes of 9,800 – 13,000 ft, may also be covered by mountain railways. The fast descents are, for the most part, single trail.

Traditionally in August the cycling day (car-free) takes place at the Stelvio Pass, the “Queen of Pass Roads”. It winds its way 17 miles through the national park up to the 9,055 ft high Stelvio Summit. The impressive views from Italy’s highest mountain pass will reward you for your efforts.

Rail and bicycle
Our tip: Explore South Tyrol with the Bikemobil Card. The ticket enables the use of bus, rail, and rental bike throughout the region.

The Bikemobil Card enables you to use all public transport in South Tyrol for 1 day, 3 or 7 consecutive days without restriction, and to use a rental bike on one day. The bikes are available at various rental shops at the railway stations as well as in various service points marked “Südtirol Rad – Bici Alto Adige”.

We in the South Tyrol enjoy golf – how about you? If you are keen on this sport on the green or even if you are just a beginner, the Hohenwart is the ideal starting point for trips in the most scenic areas around Merano and other towns in South Tyrol.

In the vicinity of the hotel, there are no less than six, mostly 18-hole golf courses. Hohenwart is a founding member of the Lana-Gutshof Brandis Golf Club at the foot of the ruins of the Lana Brandis Castle. This 9-hole course, amidst the apple trees, is 9163,386 ft long and is open almost all year round.

We also recommend the Passiria Golf Club located in a picturesque setting of the Passiria Valley, with an 18-hole course (5,755 yards, par-71) complete with water hazards and dry river-beds simulating gorges.

The golf course is open from March to November. The Petersberg Golf Club, the Dolomiti Golf Club in Sarnonico and the Carezza and Castelrotto Golf Clubs are also part of the Six Golf Course Package in Merano and Environs. The Golfclub Eppan with a 9-hole course on 107,000 ft² greens.

Take a Ride in the Saddle
Why not experience the natural beauty of the South Tyrolean landscape while riding on a horseback? After a visit to the Sulfner Stables, you’ll probably be glad you did!

The well kept, country hotel with adjoining stables, is located in picturesque Hafling (6 miles from the Hohenwart Hotel), home of the local horse breed and the Sulfner Stables are thus specialized in breeding and keeping the exceptionally tame Haflinger horses.

Regardless of whether you’re just a beginner or a seasoned professional used to horses, you can take part in various activities such as guided tours on horseback through the beautiful landscape, multi-day horse trekking, group or individual riding lessons and comfortable rides on horse-drawn carriages. All promise fun for young and old alike.

Water aerobics, yoga, pilates, spinal gymnastics, meditation, and a number of other programs will help you to physically and spiritually re-balance and reset yourself during your stay at the Hohenwart.

Winter Holidays In Schenna
Not only accommodations and cable cars will postpone their winter break this year, but also the mountain hut and alpine pasture hosts will spoil you with South Tyrolean specialities until the beginning of January.

Those who would like to enjoy the mild autumn in Schenna (even in late autumn we often register 20°C and more during the day) can look forward to the “Törggele” season and, after a pleasant walk, let the day come to a pleasant end with “Suser” (the new wine), South Tyrolean dumplings, and roasted chestnuts.

From mid-December until the beginning of January, young and old alike will enjoy the ice rink in the village center.

In historic cellars and time-honoured buildings, local exhibitors offer – surrounded by the smell of hot steaming wine and gingerbread – South Tyrolean products and traditional handicrafts: ideal souvenirs for your loved ones at home!

Skiing holidays in the Alps
This is a wonderful place for a winter walk through the snowy landscape. Breathe in deeply and enjoy nature all around you. The mild climate of Schenna also entices hikers during the winter season. Those who enjoy skiing and toboggan runs will love the sunny and family-friendly ski area Meran 2000.

The ski region is situated only 2.4 miles from Schenna. With the mountain cable-car, the skiing area can be reached in only 7 minutes from the valley. Our little guests can avail of the Alpine bob, the natural toboggan run, the “Lucki’s Kinderland” with winter kindergarten, as well as the baby lift.

There are cross-country trails, hiking routes, 3 hiring stations, as well as ski and snowboard schools. Guided snow-shoe hiking trips allow you to conquer the winter wonderland in a less noisy way.

However, the village of Schenna and the spa town of Merano are also beautifully decorated during the pre-Christmas season. Enjoy the famous Christmas Market.

Ski Resort Merano 2000
The ski area of Merano 2000 offers 25 miles of pure fun on the slopes, mild temperatures, and plenty of places to eat on spacious sun terraces. Skiers, snowboarders, and free riders will find wide runs suitable for all skill levels.

The wild curves of the sledding trail and the Alpine Bob toboggan ride hold great fun in store for groups and families. Those seeking a real athletic challenge can do some ice climbing; paragliding-tandem flights are also offered.

Directly at the mountain terminal, you will find “Lucki’s Kinderland”, the open-air kindergarten, named after its mascot. At the ski school, kids can take their first steps on skis or a snowboard. There is sufficient space to play and 3 large carpets make the ascent easier for small kids.

The Merano 2000 ski school offer private lessons and group courses throughout the season as well as special courses for children. In addition to skiing technique, instructors also teach snowboarding and disciplines such as New School, in a very engaging way.

Winter Hiking
If you can walk, you also can walk using snow-shoes. No wonder that this sporty walking is becoming more and more of a trend. The Sarntal Valley Alps, high above the holiday village of Schenna, offers the ideal terrain – and many interesting destinations. Explore the Meran 2000 skiing region by foot… on snow-shoes!

Unlimited spaces, undiscovered and hidden from many walkers. On snow-shoes, it is no problem to push straight into the white winter world, which usually only open to skiers.

For this type of snow fun, you don’t need any know-how – apart from having some experience walking in the Alps, if you want to undertake a longer excursion. In the midst of South Tyrol, there are suitable destinations for beginners, as well as advanced snow-shoe hikers.

The slightly steep slopes and sunny high plateaus of the Sarn Valley Alps are ideal to try out your first steps. Basecamp for beginners as well as the advanced in the Meran 2000 skiing region, is the holiday village of Schenna.

If you do not own snow-shoes, you can hire a pair at the mountain terminal at the Piffing Kopfl. A well marked winter hiking network of trails invites you to a variety of tours. If you are interested in a comfortable walk, look out for a walk to one of the huts in the skiing region.

Holidays in South Tyrol for the whole Family
While the parents devote their holidays to recreation, the kids are in for some action. So that mum and dad have some time for themselves, the Hohenwart offers games, fun and adventure for the little ones to make their holidays a colorful experience.

In the family pool with family sauna, families and their children can enjoy the sauna and relaxation. Of course, there is also a lot for families in Scena and in the Merano area to explore outdoors, for example numerous great hiking trails.

Are you looking for very special family experiences on holiday? Then we have put together some great highlights for your family holiday for you!

SCHENNA: OUR TOWN
Likeable and Authentic
The sunny South Tyrolean town of Schenna truly looks like a painting. The old farming settlement is situated in one of the most beautiful South Tyrolean localities and lies just above Merano. Three churches and the mausoleum of Archduke John overlook the Schenna Castle, in the town center.

There is also the lush Mediterranean landscape completed with cypresses, palm trees, vineyards, and orchards providing a seamless blend of culture and environment.

The small mountain villages of Talle, Verdines, St. George and Montescena are variously positioned at altitudes of between 2,000-5,000 ft above sea level and fall into the Schenna municipal area. Schenna’s hardy Alpine character, blended with a Mediterranean softness, characterizes the landscape, the population, and local lifestyle.

It doesn’t matter if you’re by yourself, or if you are in company or perhaps with your family. There are plenty of hiking excursions to choose from, such as along the picturesque trails running along the old irrigation canals.

There are also scenic cable car rides and even a mountain train to ride on. Refreshment options are aplenty from a number of old mountain guesthouses, lodges, and farmsteads. In Schenna, you can take a stroll through the small shopping center and sample the local products.

Merano and Environs
The Spa town of Merano is a prime meeting-place for those who love the Mediterranean atmosphere. The mild southern climate combined with numerous castles and fortresses as well as its proximity to the snow-capped peaks rising to over 10,000 ft above sea level, all contribute to make Merano a very attractive leisure destination with many attractions.

There are the all year round attractions at the “Merano Arte”, the art gallery containing works of contemporary art, while the Merano Thermal Baths and Trauttmansdorff Gardens, are known to be among the most beautiful in Italy. Imagine the sensation of walking under the magic arches of old Merano combined with an elegant shopping experience all in the cultural atmosphere of the Belle Epoque. Such experiences will be a true balm for your body and spirit.

The surrounding area close to Merano offers various attractions that are not to be missed. There’s the Tirol Castle in the town of Tirolo, which is of huge historical importance in the wider region.

Due to its convenient location, just off the Venosta Valley, Passiria, Senales, and Ultimo Valley, Merano is the ideal starting point for excursions, such as on the sunny high plateau of Montezoccolo, across which a special bus line for hikers covers the route between Avelengo, Verano, and Meltina.

This leads to the varied and beautiful Tessa Group Nature Park, which stretches from the Senales and Passiria Valley up to the main Alpine mountain chain.

Or to Merano 2000, a paradise for hiking and ski lovers as well as for those who just wish to enjoy the sun and can be easily reached by cable car near the city. In case you need more tips, the friendly Hohenwart staff is always ready to give you the benefit of their knowledge and experience.

SCHENNA CASTLE
Built around 1350, during the time of Margarethe Maultasch, and still in the possession of notable members of the Tyrolean aristocracy, it is to Archduke John of Austria in particular that Schenna Castle owes its current prominence among the castles and palaces of South Tyrol.

THE MAUSOLEUM
The mausoleum was built between 1860 and 1869 according to the plans of the Vienna architect professor Moritz Wappler, as a burial place for Archduke Johann of Austria and his family.

CASTLE TRAUTTMANSDORFF
The castle gardens have been transformed into a botanical garden with some 5,400 plants from all over the world and eleven pavilions designed by artists. The complex is one of Europe’s six most impressive gardens. The castle accommodates the “Touriseum” which presents 200 years of Alpine tourism history.

SOUTH TYROL MUSEUM OF ARCHAEOLOGY
The South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology is located in the historical center of the city of Bolzano. Within the overall historical framework, the Iceman (“Ötzi”), and his accompanying artifacts occupy a central position in the exhibition area.

MESSNER MOUNTAIN MUSEUM FIRMIAN
As the centerpiece of the Messner Mountain Museum, MMM Firmian in Sigmundskron Castle near Bozen addresses the subject of man’s encounter with the mountains.

In a setting dominated by the various peaks between the Schlern and the Texel range, the museum is spacious enough to be organized as an itinerary between the various works of art, installations, and relics that it houses.

The paths, stairs, and towers lead visitors from the depths of the mountain, where their origins and exploitation are brought to life, and the religious significance of the peaks as an aid to orientation and a bridge to the beyond, to the history of mountaineering and the alpine tourist industry that we know today. Annual exhibitions are also held.

TIROL CASTLE
Tirol Castle is the ancestral home of the Counts of Tirol. In 1270 Count Meinhard II successfully opposes the prince bishops in the region and unifies it under his name. The Count is adroit, exacts payment for his favours and only allows goods to pass through his realm on payment of tolls and duties.

This proved lucrative, for anybody travelling between the Germanic north and Italy had to pass through Tyrol. Today the castle accommodates a museum dedicated to the history of Tyrol and South Tyrol.

PRINCE’S CASTLE MERANO
This residence of the rulers of Tyrol from 1470 onwards is a good example of a private noble residence. It is one of the most complete and best-preserved castles in South Tyrol: the exhibition includes precious antique furniture and a collection of ancient musical instruments.

WOMEN’S MUSEUM
In the museum you can see articles of clothing, accessories and all-day things, which narrate us the story women in the last 200 years. The visitor gets an image of the role, the ideals and the working-life of “normal” women.

MERANO ARTE
Kunst Meran is an exhibition centre that serves as a platform for contemporary forms of expression. Some 500 m² of exhibition space on three floors offers regularly changing shows covering the plastic arts, architecture, literature, music, photography and new media.

THE WINEMUSEUM
In its four spacious halls the wine-growing museum shows beautiful tools used in viniculture across the ages.

Many now forgotten tools have been collected over decades of dedicated work and the collection now ranges from tools for cultivating the land and for grape gathering and carrying to equipment and means for pest control. There are also tools for the cultivation of cereals and the processing of cereals.

MARKETS
A number of markets enliven Merano’s commercial life: the most extensive and best known is the Friday market from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at piazzale Prader and along via Mainardo (up the intersection with via Huber). Food and clothing.
