THE HISTORY
Krone in Au has a long and exciting history. Long before the upper Bregenzerwald area was even settled, a hunting lodge was built exactly where Krone in Au is located today.

The hunting parties of the Counts of Montfort and Bregenz needed a safe place to spend the night where they would be safe from wild animals. They decided to build a lodge where the sun shone the longest. Then and now, residents benefit from the afternoon sun, especially in winter, when the sun is low.

With the settlement of the area in the 14th century, the former hunting lodge developed and became an inn with an adjacent farm. As more and more people started traveling by horse carriage, the inn also build a horse stable to provide new horses for the coaches before the crossed the nearby pass.

In a next step, a brewery was erected. A close friend of former Krone owner Pius Berlinger, a master brewer from Munich, envied him for the pristine water available in Au.

In 1904, Pius Berlinger built a summer hotel with high ceilings and bright rooms. The hotel was fully electrified and had running cold water and sanitary facilities. The “telephone number” was 1. The hotel also had a large, modern kitchen.

As summer tourism developed/flourished, Krone in Au became a sought-after address for travelers seeking a place with excellent cuisine and drinks before continuing on their journey.

After the Second World War, Walter Lingg senior married one of the daughters of the house, Katharina Berlinger. Together, they renovated the building, which had succumbed to the occupying forces. In 1971, they built a completely new addition with an indoor pool before expanding the hotel to its current size in 1981.

Their son Walter and his wife Birgit gave the entire building a new face. The hotel now appears in a modern design with lots of wood.

The distinct architecture, together with its central location, numerous cultural events and activities in summer and winter, its excellent cuisine, a beautiful Sky Spa, a modern indoor pool and a natural swimming lake make Krone in Au the perfect place for anybody looking for a relaxing holiday with quality amenities.

The sixth generation of hosts has already started working at Krone. Theresa and Albert are actively involved in developing the family business.

THE INDOOR POOL
Swimming is one of the healthiest sports. The steady pace and flowing movement is easy on your joints and your body. Our indoor pool has a constant water temperature of about 30°C. We heat it with a sustainable, intelligent system drawing waste heat from our laundry facility. The 5x11m pool is big enough for swimming laps. It is also wheelchair-accessible.

LYMPHATIC TREATMENT
This gentle massage stimulates the lymphatic system with light circular motion. It promotes vascular and lymphatic drainage and helps remove waste build-up and toxins. They can all be easily reached by bus directly from our hotel. We suggest buying your ski pass at our reception to avoid standing in line at the resort. The snow sports school in Au-Schoppernau (Bregenzerwald) teaches ski courses and cross-country ski lessons for beginners and advanced skiers. They also have entertaining children’s ski courses for kids 3 ½ years and older.

Directly in front of our hotel, on the other side of the Bregenzerache river, there is a 60-kilometer-long network of cross-country ski trails. Winter Card holders can use the trails for free. If you prefer a slower kind of winter activity, you will enjoy the serenity of the winter hiking trails near our hotel.

They will take you across glistening snowfields, through romantic winter forests and past many magical places in Au and Schoppernau. For a little extra romance, we recommend reserving a horse-drawn carriage at our reception.

EASY ACCESS TO THE SLOPES
Bregenzerwald has a variety of fantastic ski resorts, all within easy reach from our hotel. The Bregenzerwald ski areas boast many different types of runs.

You will find easy beginner slopes as well as high-alpine slopes at an altitude of 2,000 meters and higher. There are also some extra-long ski runs that are among the most beautiful ski slopes in Vorarlberg.

At Krone in Au, we are a skier-friendly hotel. We have a secure ski room as well as a heated ski boot storage room. We also offer overnight ski equipment servicing in cooperation with a sports store if your skis need tuning. And there is a direct bus from our hotel to the ski areas.

The 3-Valley Ski Pass gives you access to 29 ski areas in Bregenzerwald, Großes Walsertal valley and Lechtal valley. MICHAEL WIDMER SKI PROJECT
The Michael Widmer Ski Project is a program that offers beginner lessons as well as refresher courses for those who have been off the slopes for a while. Workshops are held regularly in Au/Schoppernau. The courses are based on a special blend of skiing and dancing.

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING IN BREGENZERWALD
Bregenzerwald is an Eldorado for cross-country skiers with trails starting right outside our door. Absorb the magic of the Bregenzerwald as you glide through snow-covered forests and along crystal-clear creeks against the backdrop of the beautiful Bregenzerwald mountains.

The cross-country trails of Au/Schoppernau encompass over 60 kilometers. Both classic style skiers as well as skate-style skiers will find plenty of trails to explore.

PEACEFUL WINTER HIKES
Discover the winter wonderland of Au with its snow-covered peaks and forests. Far off the ski slopes, Bregenzerwald presents itself from its most pristine side. Crisp air, romantic forests and snowy trails are a perfect alternative to the slopes.

The 40 kilometers of marked winter hiking trails in Au/Schoppernau are an absolute must for snow-lovers. DIEDAMSKOPF SKI AREA
The Diedamskopf ski area has 40 kilometers of slopes and fantastic runs for the entire family. A free ski bus takes you directly to the base station of the ski resort.

This is also where the office of the Snow Sports School Au-Schoppernau is located. Our little guests love Didi’s Kids Land with a 300-sqm. area for playing and arts & crafts. Childcare available. Our highlights at Diedamskopf are the amazing panorama from over 2,000 meters as well as the 10-kilometer-long non-stop run from the top of the mountain to the base station.

MELLAU-DAMÜLS SKI AREA
The Mellau-Damüls ski area is the largest ski resort in Bregenzerwald. It has 109 kilometers of marked slopes and runs as well as a high-altitude cross-country ski trail.

WARTH-SCHRÖCKEN-ARLBERG SKI AREA
Go to the Warth-Schröcken ski area to access the largest ski area in Austria. 94 lifts and cable cars and 300 kilometers of runs offer plenty of challenges for skiers of all levels. Cross-country skiers can glide along the beautiful trails at Hochtannberg.

AU-DIEDAMSKOPF-SCHOPPERNAU SKI BUS
A special ski bus will take you to the Diedamskopf base station safely, in no time and free of charge. The bus stops directly in front of our hotel. It leaves every 20 or 40 minutes, depending on the time of the day. Furthermore, all regular buses between Au and Schoppernau can also be used by skiers. Buses are free for Winter Card holders.

Our local ski school office, the Snow Sports School Au-Schoppernau, is located directly at the base station of the Diedamskopf ski area.The Snow Sports School Au-Schoppernau offers lessons for alpine skiing as well as cross-country skiing for adults and children.
