HISTORY
There is a very special atmosphere in this small hotel, known on the island as the “Hotelito”, not only for its extraordinarily unique position but also for the long history of this place out of the world.

1984
In 1984 the hotel was registered in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s smallest hotel, a further recognition that Puntagrande is a unique and special hotel that cannot be found anywhere else on Earth!

The building dates back to 1830, a room of just 40 m2 built on a tongue of lava rock which juts fearlessly into the Atlantic, lulled by the mistral wind.

Later a second floor was built and soon that building became the center of the valley trade, used to store wine, fruit and other products that were then exported all over the world, including the water of the Pozo de la Salud, a source of mineral-medicinal waters to which curative properties have been attributed since the nineteenth century.

At the beginning of the 20th century the area experienced a period of great commercial growth and on the pier a tower crane was placed that facilitated the loading and unloading of the cargo ships.

The specific characteristics of the building, its position like an oasis of beauty and peace in the middle of the sea, soon converted the property into a lodging house for tourists and travelers.

In 1948, Francisco Padrón Villarreal fell in love with this place and bought the property of the house, but a real interest in its management for tourism began only years later, in 1969, initially as a restaurant and bar.

In November 1975 the building, under conditions of decline, was restored by the architect José Luis Jiménez Saavedra, which made sure to minimize the environmental impact of the hotel and took the necessary measures to ensure the safety of the building even during storms.

The architect Jiménez Saavedra took great care to design the hotel integrating it into the surrounding landscape, using many elements from the local natural environment, such as the noble woods we can find in various parts of the building or the lava stones that make up its walls.

The internal staircase was designed by the Canarian artist Néstor de la Torre and its columns were recovered from the demolition of the old town of Telde. A large beech root hangs from the ceiling and a root of Sabina decorates a wall.

The interior of the hotel is a true hymn to the sea, full of traditional objects of the naval history of the island. Thanks to all this, Puntagrande Hotel has been recognized as a museum and a place of cultural interest.

In 1984 the hotel entered the World’s Guinness Records as the World’s smallest hotel. In the same year the Ministry of Information and Tourism assigned to the Punta Grande restaurant the bronze plate for Tourism Excellence, and in 1991 the Canary Government conferred at the hotel the silver medal of “Importance for Turism”.

As stated by the President of the El Hierro Cabildo, Alpidio Armas, the island’s history is strictly interconnected with this small hotel, which has become an emblem of the island.

In 2019 the Hotel Puntagrande has been declared by the Canary Islands Government “Bien de Interés Cultural” (BIC), a site of cultural interest, in the category of Ethnological Site.

2018
In 2018 the Hotel Puntagrande was bought by David Nahmias and his wife Paula, who with their 3 girls Marta, Sophie and Noa moved from Italy to Tenerife a few years ago. As they saw the small Hotelito of El Hierro they fell in love with it and decided to move on this island to start this new adventure and a new life.

With a lot of enthusiasm, energy and courage, they have brought a breath of fresh air to the Puntagrande Hotel and they are ready to welcome with a smile all the guests who arrive at this small hotel.

GREEN, SUSTAINABLE, PLASTIC-FREE
One of the great assets of El Hierro is being a pure and unpolluted environment, with its true and clean wildernesses. We deeply love the unique and spectacular location of our little hotel and we are totally committed to the conservation and protection of the natural surroundings and its historical resources.

– Puntagrande Hotel is an integral part of the landscape in which it is immersed and it is designed respecting cultural and environmental principles, starting from its construction: the walls are made of lava stones, which is the typical natural element of El Hierro, the interior is furnished with local stones and woods, also repurposing traditional seafaring objects.

– The hotel is a climate responsive building, thanks to its bioclimatic construction and its location: no heating and air conditioning systems are needed in the hotel, the thick walls from lava stones provide insulation in winter, and keep the rooms cool in summer.

The special shape of building and its orientation matter too, so that the wind moves in particular ways. It’a s naturally green building, with a perfect optimization of materias, construction techniques and climate consideration.

As an eco-friendly hotel, we continually seek ways to protect natural resources, to minimise consumption of raw materials, energy and emissions, and we take special care of the waste treatment so that the environmental impact is as low as possible.

In 2020 we have cut out all single-use plastic objects becoming a plastic-free hotel! Moreover we have limited to the minimum the use of paper thanks to important ecological choices in the hotel as well as in the restaurant.

All our staff is involved and encouraged to be proactive in respecting and improving our environmental policies. In addition, we are committed to the local community development by choosing locally sourced products and services.

Two walls are made of lava stone – like the entire Hotel Puntagrande – which is the typical natural element of El Hierro, while the other two consist of large windows with access to private terraces.

In the room you will find exclusive items such as the cozy four-poster bed, the Japanese-style toilet facilities and the tantra armchair. The shower is for two people and it’s totally in teak wood, one of the finest and noblest wood in the world thanks to its elegance and durability.

The two sinks are made of fossil wood, an extraordinary material to which are attributed properties and benefits for the body and the mind, releasing anxiety and bringing a sense of stability.

It is the result of trees turned into stone, in which all the organic materials have been replaced by minerals in the slow process of permineralization, maintaining though the original structure of the wood.

Two incredible private terraces with a breathtaking view. Watching the sunset on the front terrace in total privacy is a special kind of magic and mystic experience that you will never forget!

The terrace of Love, of 40 square meters, directly overlooks the ocean and offers total intimacy, for sunbathing, for tasting a romantic aperitif, for enjoying the spectacle of the sunset or the starry sky. The terrace of the Friends, of 60 square meters, offers instead a panoramic view on the island.

The ceiling above the bed has a large glass window, so that you can lie in bed while gazing upon the starry sky, a private observatory in this remote place of the Canary Islands, with no city lights and no noise, in perfect total harmony with nature.

And there’s more: you can admire the stars even while you take a the shower. It’s a sky that is not just outside, it embraces you even in the room.

Just few steps far from the Hotel are the Puntagrande Apartments (only adults), 2 comfortable and fully renovated apartments which offer the opportunity to stay in front of the pier of Las Puntas, in the most spectacular and enchanting place of El Hierro.

They consist of a modern and colorful living area with a kitchen, a table, a sofa and two armchairs, a double room with a queen bed, a private bathroom with tub and shower. On top of the apartments there’s a solarium terrace offering a wonderful view on the ocean.

Puntagrande Apartments are fully furnished for a comfortable stay and they are right in front of the hotel, so that you can enjoy the amazing view and have full autonomy during your vacation.

Here you will not find satellite TV or other options typical of 5-star hotels, but you will find a richness that satisfies the most demanding souls, the real richness.

Puntagrande Restaurant has an indoor dining room where you can feel the enchanted and authentic atmosphere of a naval setting among traditional objects from old fishing boats, and a large terrace on the ocean where you can taste our recipes surrounded by a light pleasant breeze and an enchanting sea view on the wild virgin coast of La Frontera.

SITE OF CULTURAL INTEREST
Puntagrande is not only a hotel but also a site of cultural interest, the building itself is a destination to visit, due to its peculiar characteristics and the absolutely unique atmosphere.

Its interior holds nautical memorabilia and many traditional nautical objects, from the telegraph of the old postal barge Viera y Clavijo to the portholes of the ships used as the base of tables and bedside tables, original lampsticks of old fishing boats hanging from the ceiling, a large nautical compass, and a vintage diving suit in the corner that the locals call Arturo.

An entire wall collects an impressive number of registration plates of old boats, including the plate of the ship Angela Pando, which went dry and sunk in the Isleta de Gran Canaria.

In 2018 the Hotel Puntagrande has been declared by the Canary Islands Government “Bien de Interés Cultural” (BIC), a site of cultural interest, in the category of Ethnological Site (Decree 170/2018 of November 26, which was published in the “Boletín oficial de Canarias” on December 10, 2018).

VISITS
It is possible to visit the Hotel Puntagrande as a place of cultural interest. The days for the visit are: every Saturday from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm and from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, upon reservation (to be made at least one month in advance). Adequate clothing is required.

As this is the smallest hotel in the world, please note that the whole building is intended for this purpose. Therefore, in order to preserve the privacy of our guests and to ensure the correct service at the restaurant, the visit can only take place during the time indicated above, also incuding the external area of the property as well as the space hosting the private naval collection, located inside the building.
