SUMMER IN MADRID
The summer season offers a unique opportunity to revel in the wonders of Madrid, a city that exudes both energy and charm in the warm summer months. During this period, the Spanish capital comes alive with a series of major events that captivate locals and visitors alike.

In June, Madrid’s Gay Pride festivities are a burst of diversity and celebration that take the city by storm each and every year. For several days, the streets are filled with colour, music and parades in a show of support and visibility for the LGBTQ+ community. Through concerts, shows and cultural events, Madrid becomes a meeting point where equality and love are celebrated in all their glory.

One of Madrid’s must-see summer destinations is the renowned Zarzuela Racecourse. Here, you can enjoy a unique experience as you watch exciting races, dine in the gardens, or discover treasures at their fashion market.

During the summer of 2023, all the excitement will be unleashed on Saturdays in June from 7 pm. In addition, from the 22nd of June until the 5th of August, Thursdays and Saturdays will host nocturnal races, perfect for cooling off on the warmest of evenings.

The last month of summer sees the arrival of the famous Fiestas de Agosto (August festivities), one of the most deeply rooted traditions in Madrid. Occurring consecutively and in adjoining neighbourhoods, the festivities of San Cayetano, San Lorenzo and La Paloma will unfold between the 4th and 15th of August.

The first to kick off will be San Cayetano in the Rastro-Embajadores area, followed by San Lorenzo in the charming Lavapiés, and the festive cycle will reach its peak with La Paloma in the historic district of La Latina. This 2023 will see the return of traditional dances, competitions, concerts and a wide variety of street food stalls that we invite you to discover.

Madrid is a destination bursting with activities and charm during the summer months. Whether immersed in traditional festivities, celebrating diversity, enjoying horse racing or basking on the terraces of the city’s restaurants, the Spanish capital guarantees unforgettable experiences that will linger in the hearts of all those who visit.

ENJOY MADRID FROM HIGH ABOVE
Here is a different way to discover Madrid from a fantastic vantage point: the city’s rooftops are the perfect location to enjoy the magic skyline and the incredible variety of architectural styles with a drink in one hand and the sunset in the background. Find below a selection of our favourite terraces and rooftops to enjoy the summer vibe from the capital’s very top.

  • Círculo de Bellas Artes: Renowned for being the largest rooftop terrace in Madrid, this spectacular venue offers a panoramic view of the Spanish capital, encompassing Gran Vía, Retiro Park and La Latina.. Círculo de Bellas Artes. A favourite hot spot among art lovers, Círculo de Bellas Artes redefines dining with a view, and serves gourmets dishes all day long.
  • El viajero: This fabulous rooftop restaurant stands on a three-storey, late 19th century mansion in the heart of La Latina neighbourhood. Many people visit this emblematic restaurant every weekend to savour its unique fusion cuisine of healthy, tasty dishes, and try their signature cocktails, while enjoying the soft light of Madrid’s golden hour.
  • Torcuato: At the top of the ABC Serrano Shopping Center, a few meters from Tótem Madrid, Torcuato Restaurant stands on an impressive 700 square meter rooftop terrace overlooking the Castellana. Besides the view, its exotic, rich décor will certainly make an impression, not to mention the menu, featuring a great variety of fusion dishes inspired by cuisines from across the globe. Once the stars start shining above, you might want to stay longer and celebrate the night with one of their famous cocktails. You might like to know that – due to its very recent opening- the rooftop of the ABC Serrano Shopping Center is the new ‘place to be’ this summer.
  • El Corte Inglés de Serrano: Located on the seventh floor of El Corte Inglés de Serrano, the “Gourmet Experience” is the ultimate place for a true gastronomic moment… with a view! Home to the fabulous kitchens of three internationally renowned chefs, David Muñoz, with StreetXO, Roberto Ruiz, with Salón Cascabel , and Jordi Roca, with Rocambolesc., here visitors can discover the best of the world’s cuisine. And there is more than meets the eye: the 100 square meter terrace of Salón Cascabel offers a spectacular view of Madrid including the Salamanca neighbourhood and the city centre, while tasting authentic Mexican tacos with Margaritas, watching the sun slowly set below the horizon.

SALAMANCA FOOD SCENE
Moving along the streets of the Salamanca neighbourhood, we find the legendary Bel Mondo, an Italian restaurant that will transport you to different parts of Italy for lunch or dinner. With 100% Italian cuisine and a unique cocktail menu, this restaurant will turn you into a Forno Star, a concept coined by the restaurant itself.

We continue in the direction of the Retiro Park and on a large corner is the now famous Ultramarinos Quintín. Inspired by the old grocery stores, at Quintín it is possible to have breakfast, lunch, dinner or a drink at any time of the day or night.

Some options like these can also be found in Callejón Jorge Juan in places like El Paraguas, Amazónico or Taberna Los Gallos, which are a more formal option, but with the same quality cuisine.

Almost as soon as you reach the Parque del Retiro on Velázquez you will see Numa Pompilio, a restaurant that takes you to the most classic and romantic Italy. On its interior terrace you can enjoy traditional and very refined recipes with influences from other European countries such as Pheasant Lasagne, Tagliolino with White Truffle, Lobster Soup or desserts that will surprise you.

Another not so formal gastronomic offer in the neighbourhood is Alfredo’s, the pioneer restaurant serving American-style hamburgers on a charcoal grill. What for many is the best burger in Madrid is accompanied by corn on the cob, jacket potato or coleslaw.

THE GOLD MILE
Just a few steps away from TÓTEM Madrid, the Gold Mile is one of the most chic and luxurious neighborhoods of the capital with the largest fashion, jewelry and decoration brands worldwide.

The commercial area par excellence in the Gold Mile, in which the most important brands are concentrated, is located among the streets Serrano, Jorge Juan, Ortega and Gasset, Juan Bravo and Prince of Vergara.

To enjoy the Golden Mile as a native, our Local Guru recommends a walking tour starting from Tótem Madrid through La Gasca street towards Ortega y Gasset, where you will find a great variety of small boutiques with a lot of charm.

The tour continues to Plaza del Marqués de Salamanca, where jewelers, boutiques, antique shops and art galleries are surrounded by spectacular buildings of classical architecture. We continue our walk through Castelló, Velázquez and Claudio Coello until Jorge Juan St., where luxury brands are concentrated for men.

The route ends at Serrano St. where we recommend to stop by and enjoy a glass of wine with some tapas in one of its terraces. For those who are interested in Spanish fashion, our Local Guru recommends visiting from small boutiques to renowned national brands such as…

Loewe, recognized worldwide,Manolo Blahnik, Adolfo Dominguez, Amaya Arzuaga, Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, Roberto Verino or Angel Schlesser, who share space with designers such as Chanel, Armani, Valentino or Louis Vuitton.

FLAMENCO IN MADRID
Madrid is known as the capital of flamenco in which to enjoy great shows in the city’s theaters, as well as small recitals of singing and dancing in typical “tablaos”. It is the city that introduces the whole record industry of flamenco to the world and home of the best known flamenco artists.

Perpetuating the tradition that dates back to the 19th century, where the locals used to enjoy flamenco shows during the nights of Madrid, there are many bars and “tablaos” that offer the possibility of experiencing a purest flamenco show performed by profesional artists, and combined with a traditional Spanish dinner.

THE PRADO MUSEUM
You have probably heard of the Prado Museum, the second most important art gallery in Europe and the third in the world. But did you know that the Museum was created by chance? King Fernando VII of Spain, wishing to modernize the Royal Palace, decided to get even with the hundreds of artworks that his predecessors had accumulated.

Some of these works were made by genius of Spanish and European painting such as Velázquez, El Greco, El Bosco or Rubens. The paintings were kept in the Prado Hall (built by Juan de Villanueva) and, although the place was not designed to be a fine arts museum, thanks to all these donations, it was inaugurated as such in 1819.

To this day, the Prado Museum houses the largest collection of paintings by Velázquez (among them, his masterpiece Las Meninas), El Greco, Tiziano or Rubens, which makes it the largest and best “pre” avant-garde art gallery in the world.

But if there is an artist that stands out in the Museum, it is Goya, hosting 152 of his works. Possibly this is why Goya’s statue is the only one facing the Museum. The other two, by Murillo and Velázquez, are located backwards.

Throughout its centuries-old history, The Prado Museum has managed to preserve, exhibit and enrich the collections and artworks that, linked to the history of Spain, create one of the main manifestations of artistic expression in the world.
