The il Borgo di Vescine, initially a fortress of the Langobardic era that then, over the centuries, became a peasant village, was recently restored by Lucia Paladin who, with love and passion, wanted to restore the splendor, simplicity and quality of rural life to the Borgo of yesteryear.

Ms. Paladin wanted to give a personal touch to the restoration of the village with the aim of creating an environment in which one could breathe the magical atmosphere of “home away from home” in the heart of Chianti.

The il Borgo di Vescine is perched on the top of a verdant hill, 600 meters above the sea level, and overlooks the historic town of Radda in Chianti. The view gets lost in the an expanse of olive trees and vineyards that are of the most evocative landscapes of Chianti.

The vineyards and centuries-old olive trees surrounding the village are cultivated on ancient terraces bordered by dry stone walls, now registered by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Over the centuries the village has lost its original military connotation to become a small peasant village inhabited by 14 families until the early 1950s.

Today it presents itself as an exclusive relais of 28 deluxe rooms and suites, each one different from the other, furnished with an elegant but welcoming style in which the original authenticity of the Borgo has been deliberately preserved so that the genuine beauty of the place is kept intact.

SUITE
Sophistication, hospitality and elegance are the elements that make this accomodation special. The suites contain two separate areas making our guests feel at “home away from home”.

Fitted as always with the tuscan features of terracotta floors and beams these historic rooms have the most individual pieces of furniture and upholstery done exclusively by local artisans using only the most refined tuscan textiles.

The sofas, the headboard the curtains in the suites are something you will not find anywhere. They are entirely hand made for Borgo di Vescine to Signora Lucia’s specification.

The suites have an average area space of 4o Sq. Metres (135 Sq. Feet) and it features a king size bed in the bedroom and a lovely relaxing separate room with custom made sofas. These swanky suites makes a longer stay seem more enjoyable. The perfect solution for your long stay in Tuscany.

SUPERIOR ROOM WITH TERRACE
The superior rooms at Borgo di Vescine are elegant, romantic and with the same Tuscan feature like handmade terracotta floor and wood beams but what makes them unique is the one feature: The private terrace. This exceptional item differs from room to room and from that, you will be able to treasure the most stunning views and the scent of the Chianti countryside.

The outdoor furniture is the added bonus to make your stay the most cozy and relaxing while the inside are equipped with most comfortable beds and fitted with the most graceful embroidered cotton sheets.

The superior rooms have a very spacious from 25 to 30 Sq. Metres (105 Sq. feet) area and are suitable for up to 3 people. We can add a baby cot, an extra bed or guests can use the very comfortable fold out sofa beds.

THE LIFE IN THE BORGO
The relais Il Borgo di Vescine wants to revive the ancient village as it once was, therefore guests are not simply passers-by but during their stay they become the inhabitants of the village itself and can experience the life and habits of those who have them preceded by a few centuries. As in the past, the central meeting place of the Borgo is still the Piazzetta where guests are invited at sunset to have an aperitif.

The terraces in the shade of our centuries-old olive trees have become the ideal place to spend moments of relaxation, and the house of the village chief “ser Bellincione” has now been adapted with common living-rooms for guests, a wine shop where you can taste the wine and oil produced in our estates and on the second floor there is the internal room of our restaurant characterized by a fireplace dating back to the 1500 of incomparable beauty.

In the evening the village comes alive and becomes a magical place, it seems to go back in time with the light of candles and the background created by the sound of crickets.

On weekly basis the Square or the olive grove become the stage of revocations of village festivals with jesters and storytellers that the ancient inhabitants of the village used to celebrate special occasions. The master of the festivals is the ancient medieval oven, in which for the occasion the dishes are cooked as in the past together with the guests.

THE GROUNDS
Il Borgo di Vescine is situated on a hill between Radda and Castellina, the heart of the Chianti Classico region. The position and the perfect soil has made this 200 acres plot, the most sought-after land by generations of farmers.

Over a thousand years ago they started cultivating it by creating the typical land terraces with stone dry-walls, which is now a Unesco “Human legacy” protected component and recognised as a historical heritage item.

With the objective of bringing life back to the hamlet, Lucia Paladin, has sunk heart and soul into this project with the specific goal of making the Borgo thrive like it was for centuries when the locals made it flourish. By doing so over the years, she has revived the terraces with all the plantation necessary, which was the livelihood of the Borgo inhabitants.

Today, our centuries old olive trees and the vines with special Sangiovese grapes, is the perfect spot to spend a moment of peace and relaxation. You have the chance of tasting our very products directly from the farmland.

A MEDIEVAL DINNER
A very special evening. Every week in our Piazza, we recreate the same dinner-party atmosphere that Vescine’s old settlers created. It was the Borgo’s celebration banquet where the locals used it as an aexcuse to have a feast, drink and laugh.

We invite our guests to feel the same conviviality in the most charming and fascinating atmosphere where tables are adorned with flowers and plenty of fresh food is done on the spot in our 700 year old wood fire oven.

Pizza, bread and freshly cooked meals are done patiently in the oven and use only local stone ground flour and grains. A joyful occasion which can be enjoyed exclusively by large broups if booked in advance.

CHIANTI CLASSICO & PROSECCO
Lady Lucia Paladin, born into wine production royalty is true a wine enthusiast. An honorary member of “associazione donne del vino” (the women wine producer association board) after working many years in the family wine production, has branched out to concentrate on her two estates.

Tuscany, where her passion has won her many awards for the Chianti Classico and Veneto, her native land where she produces Prosecco, the bubbly white wine with heart and spirit.

With the purpose of making Il borgo di Vescine and its 40 Hectares (100 acres) re-live again like centuries past, Signora Lucia has committed herself to this very ambitious project. Firstly, she wanted to preserve and sustain the sense of agricultural country living that this land has so given us for many centuries.

By doing so, the preservation has started with the natural land terraces bound by the dry-stone wall partitioning. The same walls that are now Unesco world heritage sites. It is precisely on the these terraces that the Borgo inhabitants cultivated and fed themselves for centuries.

Vegetable produce, olive grove, vineyards, fruit orchards and the herb spices garden were once the main agricultural resources of the village and are now alive and fresh again thanks to Signora Lucia’s passion and vision.

Just like in the past, the vineyards allow us to produce a fantastic Chianti Classico and a superb Chianti Riserva expertly and patiently aged in oak barrels, while the olive grove gives us the opportunity to assemble and produce one of the most praised and flavoursome olive oils in the Chianti area.

TERRITORY & BIODIVERSITY
A unique land that surrounds the Borgo di Vescine, located at 600 m (1900 feet) above sea level, in which the natural disintegration process of native alberese stones has given it a harsh and complex soul.

The land and soil, located on the terraces, is rich in minerals and poor in organic matter, which is optimal conditions for growing grapes and olives. The woods are thick full of oaks and fine bush trees, flowers and aromatic herbs that together combined, creates the biodiversity needed to make this a fruitful land.
