As the closest luxury resort in Sedona to the Grand Canyon, we are excited to share our passion and insight for a truly memorable Grand Canyon visit.

How to Experience the Grand Canyon

Our team can make sure your experience is one-of-a-kind, as you decide how you want to see the Grand Canyon: hiking, biking, by air, by train, or on a private or group tour.

Tips for Exploring the Grand Canyon

  • Take the time to truly experience the Grand Canyon. While its beauty can be viewed from the top just beyond the parking lot, the magnitude can only be experienced by spending time and a little energy. There are tours to give you a better understanding of the history, and take you to superior vantage points for views and historical buildings. And if you enjoy a good hike, the team at The Hike House can point you in the right direction to the best spots.
  • Study up on the Grand Canyon. Yes, there’s a lot to learn about this world wonder, but it doesn’t have to feel like school. As we recommended in Tip #1, you can take an informative and engaging tour. Or do your own research on the history of the land and people, as well as its native species of plants and animals (including 60 unique species of birds).
  • Keep your wits about you. While so much work has been done in its 100-year history of being part of the National Parks, the Grand Canyon is still a vast area that can present some danger if you aren’t careful. Also, be sure to dress accordingly as the weather at the top (South Rim) is quite different than the weather at the bottom (Phantom Ranch), as it’s usually 20 degrees warmer at the bottom. In the summer, Phantom Ranch will exceed 100 degrees.
  • Take photos. It’s not too often you get the chance to experience one of the seven natural wonders of the world, so double check the batteries of your camera or smartphone are fully charged. (And if you’re sharing your sensational shots on social media, be sure to tag us @LaubergeSedona on Instagram and Twitter, and @LaubergeSedona on Facebook.)

Driving from Sedona to the Grand Canyon
The majority of our guests make the Grand Canyon a day trip and drive in their own vehicle. If you have the time, we suggest you “do the loop” and drive up one route then come back on a different route to the one you started on.

We can provide you with all the maps, directions, and suggestions that you need. Grand Canyon: Plan Your Visit would be another good resource as far as other things to expect for your journey. It is approximately a 2-hour drive on The Fast Route (I-40 W to AZ-64 N):

  • Take State Route 179 away from the hotel and get onto I-17. If you stay on 1-17, it becomes the main street of Flagstaff, and when you go under the railway line, the first traffic light is the left turn that becomes Hwy 180. Take 180 until Hwy 64, then 64 to the south entrance for the Grand Canyon.
  • If you came in at the south entrance, you can drive yourself to the overlooks on the East Rim, and walk around the main area of the South Rim—where you will see the historic El Tovar Lodge, the Hopi House, Kolb Studio, and the Bright Angel trail that goes down in to the Canyon. They offer free shuttles which run every 15 minutes and take you to the overlooks out to the west.
  • This route takes about two hours and fifteen minutes and is the most direct. For a route that has a few more stops along the way:
  • Take State Route 179 away from the hotel and get onto I-17 until you reach Flagstaff, then take I-40 East to 89 North. Proceed towards the eastern entrance of the Grand Canyon at the Desert View Watchtower along AZ-64 W.
  • Along the way you can stop and visit Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument, the Wupatki National Monument, and the Historic Cameron Trading Post, specializing in Native American crafts since 1916.
  • Once you are there, it is easy to get around to the various overlooks and other interesting sights.

Our Top 10 Things to Do in Sedona

1. Walk Down Gallery Row – Located along Highway 179—starting at Tlaquepaque and extending to Hillside galleries—Gallery Row features some of Sedona’s finest galleries and shops. It’s easy to walk from L’Auberge, or take a complimentary ride with our valet.

2. Take the Drive Up Schnebly Hill Road – The original road from Sedona to Flagstaff, it’s a very rough gravel road, but the scenery is spectacular. 4WD is recommended and not suitable for low-riding vehicles.

About 20 minutes up, there is a steel gate; park to the left just before it and walk uphill to the overlook. After that, you can continue driving up Schnebly Hill to the top of the Mogollon Rim (about another 20 minutes).

3. Visit the Chapel of the Holy Cross – Ranked as one of the “Seven Man-Made Wonders of Arizona”, this 1956 Roman Catholic chapel was built directly into the red rocks of Sedona. It sits high above the landscape, showcasing wonderful views from both inside and out.

4. Experience Sedona’s Spiritual Vortexes – Renowned for its vortexes—the swirling centers of subtle energy coming from the surface of the earth—Sedona attracts people from all over the world to experience the power of this energy.

Although the four best-known are Airport Mesa, Bell Rock, Boynton Canyon, and Cathedral Rock, there are many more to be found, and our concierge can assist your journey with maps and tours.

5. Go to Crescent Moon Picnic Site – Located where Oak Creek flows below Cathedral Rock (the most photographed rock formation in Arizona), this site is perfect for a walk or picnic. Please note: There is a $10 parking fee at the entrance.

6. Visit the Palatki Heritage Site – Offering rare pictographs and open to public viewing, this heritage site is not well known, but well worth the visit.

7. Drive Through Oak Creek Canyon – Considered one of the top scenic drives in the U.S., it goes 12 miles to the switchbacks, and then to the top of the rim and an overlook.

From the L’Auberge entrance/exit, turn right and stay on State Route 89A. Spend some time in Downtown Flagstaff on Route 66 or wind back to Uptown Sedona.

8. Explore the Town of Jerome – Once proclaimed to be the wickedest town in the West, the former copper-mining town of Jerome is now a designated National Historic District. It’s also an artist hub, having been resettled by artist and crafts people.

It is “different” and feels like it is from another era—almost falling off the side of Cleopatra Hill, half way up the Mingus Mountain. A 45-minute drive from Sedona.

9. Catch a Sedona Sunset – The sunsets here are spectacular, and the best spot in Sedona to view them is the Airport Mesa. There are two different spots: one is the large overlook, and the other is a short hike half way up Airport Road. There is a $3 parking fee to go to the overlook, but it’s definitely worth it for the views.

10. Try Walking Meditation at Amitabha Stupa and Peace Park – Situated at the base of Thunder Mountain, this is a nice place for walking meditation (the Stupa goes clockwise) and quiet contemplation.

Take 89A South to Andante Road in West Sedona to Pueblo, turn left. and park. Enter through the gate and follow the trail up to the Stupa. Donations are well appreciated.
