DIVING
Into The Deep Blue: Your Chance To Encounter Some Of The Most Magical Creatures Of The Underwater World. Take on an ocean adventure to discover the abundant underwater world of the Maldives with half and full-day diving safaris into the deep. Hop aboard the speedboat for the start of your underwater voyage, with experiences as remote as they are beautiful.

Qualified divers can find a wealth of sites to uncover with around 35 sites near to Anantara Dhigu alone in this year-round destination offering temperate waters and excellent visibility. Beginners can also get a taste for the deep blue with a Discover Scuba Diving introductory dive or take on the PADI certification course.

COCO THILA
This teardrop-shaped reef is one of the most thrilling dive spots in the South Male Atoll. Famous for its abundant sea-life including dogtooth tuna and barracuda, ‘Jack’s Corner’ has a cave at 23 metres with soft coral and dense schools of bigeye trevally and snapper.

KUDA GIRI WRECK
An exciting reef for beginners or wreck-lovers, Kuda Giri Wreck is full of holes and overhangs which have become home to a rich array of marine life. Located west of Dhigufinolhu, the steel wreck boasts residents including ghost pipefish, leaf fish and nudibranch, hiding in the well-preserved structure’s many hideaways.

GURAIDHOO CORNER
Boasting turtles, grey reef sharks and eagle rays, Guraidhoo Corner is a unique spot for spotting a rich array of the region’s marine life. Whether an outgoing or ingoing current, Guraidhoo promises to never disappoint.

SANDUNE
This sandy enclave is a favourite for spotting mantas between July and September, gathering around the undulating sandy bottom when outgoing currents are most frequent. The sandy terrain means visibility is around 15 metres due to the outgoing currents but its unique bathymetry makes it a spot not to be missed.

MIYARU FARU
Famous for its population of sharks, Miyaru Faru, located at the southern end of Fushidhiggaru Falhu, is home to the likes of white-tip and grey reef sharks, eagle rays and giant Napoleon fish, found around the verdant overhangs at 17 metres.

Dive deeper and you’ll discover the leopard sharks which can be seen laying on the sandy bed, making it easy for divers to savour the magnificence of these graceful species.

Coral reefs protect the pristine beaches at Anantara Dhigu, Anantara Veli and Naladhu Maldives, and guard the islands’ crystal-clear lagoon. They also support an astounding array of tropical fish, crustaceans and bizarre-looking molluscs. However, for all of its beauty and apparent resilience, coral is a sensitive organism, vulnerable to extreme weather and sudden environmental changes.

In our commitment to protect the environment, Anantara initiated the Coral Adoption Programme. We invite our guests to participate in this long-term project, by planting coral in our reef nursery and following its growth with photo updates or return visits.

THE REEF
Swim, snorkel or kayak above reefs that shelter large-mouthed groupers, brightly coloured parrotfish and the occasional moray eel. Watch closely for the unmistakable shape of the spotted eagle ray or try to spot a giant clam, the world’s largest bivalve. Count the anemones, starfish and sea urchins. Look for butterflyfish nibbling on coral. Follow a school of damselfish across the reef.

PROJECT SNAPSHOT
In 1998, more than 90 percent of shallow coral reefs in the Maldives died when El Niño raised sea temperatures by 4°C. The coral has regenerated significantly since suffering from the bleaching event; however future temperature fluctuations threaten its survival.

Anantara’s coral reef adoption programme launched in 2010 to accelerate regeneration and strengthen our surrounding reef ecosystem. In the years since, the project has continued to evolve and expand, while always allowing guests to leave a positive mark on the reefs by sharing in our efforts.
